Christa Malay is an artist born and educated in Berlin, Germany. She has been living in Washington State, USA, since 1967. All through her early years of raising a family she never had any doubt she would become a professional artist. Painting with watercolors, she also spent hours sketching, drawing and teaching classes until she received a grant and a scholarship to participate in a three year graphic design and fine art program at Spokane Community College. She graduated with honors in 1981, freelancing as an illustrator and graphic designer while tutoring painting classes. In 1986 Christa Malay set up a silkscreen printing studio with her partner Martin. They moved to Lopez, an island off the northwest coast of Washington State. Christa Malay has designed and printed more than 130 serigraph editions, receiving many commissions from art galleries, ski resorts, town festivals and summer vacation destinations in Canada, Oregon, California, Colorado and Washington. Printing serigraphs is very physically-demanding work and after ten years of repetitive movements, her elbows demanded a change of venue. All along, Christa Malay had been painting in watercolors and pastels. Large-scale landscapes of her surroundings on the islands resulted in many sales and commissions. Since then, she has painted more than 1330 paintings. Christa Malay has been exhibiting regularly and successfully every year in solo shows, group exhibitions, art invitationals and competitions, winning several awards. One such award led to her work being published in the International Artist Magazine and also in the book titled "How Did You Paint That?" Since 1998 Christa Malay has also published her etchings on zinc plates through The Island International Artist Company, on Guemes Island, Washington. These etchings are individually enhanced with pastel or watercolor. A selection of her work in pastels and watercolors is now also available as limited edition giclées. |
